About Engineering at SIGI
Southworth International Group, Inc. (SIGI) is the world's largest manufacturer of ergonomic material handling equipment and container handling equipment for vertical lifting and work positioning. Our products are designed to improve worker productivity while reducing the potential for workplace injuries. Our equipment includes scissor lift tables, container tilters, pallet level loaders, turntables, and other palletizing equipment, dock lifts, and stackers.

SIGI has 20 full-time engineers in our Falmouth, ME office. We foster an environment that encourages collaboration, self-improvement, and growth.

About the Engineering Internship Program
Upon arriving at SIGI, you will be introduced to our products, the systems behind them, and the programs we use to design our machines. We will also establish your SolidWorks skills and teach you our best modeling and drafting practices. At the end of the first two weeks, we will begin to introduce projects. These projects will help us with process improvement, design standardization, and building resources for the department. There will be a mixture of solo and group projects. You will work with experienced engineers and individuals from other departments. There will be a weekly group meeting with the Intern Supervisor and Director of Engineering to discuss the status of your projects and to receive feedback. You will also have weekly 1-on-1 check-ins with the Intern Supervisor. These check-ins will help establish your goals and will provide you with guidance and encouragement. These projects are meaningful to the department and will help improve overall efficiency. You will be able to see your projects implemented and used by the engineering team.

You will gain significant experience using SolidWorks and PDM through daily use and structured tutorials. Proper modeling and drafting practices, as well as time-saving tips and techniques, will be introduced regularly, developing you into an adept and agile modeler. You will have the opportunity to take the Certified SolidWorks Associate Exam (CSWA) and Certified SolidWorks Professional Exam (CSWP) paid for by SIGI.

You will learn the essentials of machine electrical design including:

  • Electrical power and controls
  • Industrial control panels
  • Wire sizing and routing
  • Motors
  • Sensors
  • Specification drawings
  • Wiring diagrams
  • Advanced topics of interest:
    • Variable frequency drives (VFDs)
    • Programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
    • Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBAs) and microcontroller programming

SIGI's vast product line provides the opportunity to work on a variety of systems. You will have the chance to learn how the engineering concepts you explored in your classes are used in the professional world. You will develop technical engineering skills and the career skills needed to succeed in corporate business culture as well as the project management techniques that enable you to tackle complex issues like those seen in a senior capstone design project or future job. You will experience how rewarding it is to make a lasting contribution to SIGI!
